Our Top Lodging Choice For Families- Shoshone Hotel Big Sky
Having skied at Big Sky every season for over 15 years, we have stayed at a wide variety of lodging options from mountain chalets to hotel rooms. Over the years, we’ve narrowed down our preferred Big Sky lodging and the Shoshone Hotel is still our top choice.
Here are 7 reasons why we always try to book the Shoshone Hotel at Big Sky.

Why We Love Shoshone Hotel Big Sky
1. Location, Location, Location
The Shoshone Hotel Big Sky sits squarely in the heart of Big Sky Resort’s Mountain Village which serves as the primary base area of the ski mountain. Here you’ll find a few restaurants, the new Vista Food Hall, ski rentals, chair lifts, lessons, and even a small grocery store.
If you are skiing with kids, staying in Mountain Village is simply easier. Suit up and easily walk to two high speed, heated, and covered chairlifts (Ramcharger and Swift Current) or walk to the new Explorer Gondola or covered magic carpet if just learning to ski.
The majority of our favorite ski runs, Mr. K, Lizette, and the Shedhorn area are also accessed from Mountain Village, and you’ll find plenty of variety for any skill level. Lots of greens for beginners and plenty of challenging blacks for the expert skiers in the family.

2. Room Layout
The one-bedroom, 2 bath Shoshone Hotel offers a cozy, western decor, mountain views, plenty of space and a full kitchen. The bedroom is separate from the living area where a murphy bed and sofa bed (the mattresses are actually comfortable) can be pulled down to sleep extra guests (for a total of 6 guests).
This is a good example of a Shoshone Hotel room available on VRBO: Shoshone Ski-In/Out w/ amazing views, community hot tub/pool/fitness center & fireplace!

Tip: Look for a “corner unit” at the Shoshone–they are just a bit larger than the regular units and have more windows in the living area. Also look for a unit that is on a higher floor level (4th floor or higher). You will have better views and the early morning snow plow won’t be quite as loud.
3. Kitchen
I know I’ve already mentioned the full kitchen, but for us and for many families, having access to a kitchen can be a game changer, especially when restaurants are not only expensive but may have wait lists or perhaps the kids just need some chill time in a quiet space rather than a noisy restaurant.
For a quick meal, we often walk over to pick up a pizza at the Vista Food Hall and bring it to the condo where we can warm it up as needed in the oven. Note that the food hall closes by 7pm! Lesson learned here…
We’ve also purchased frozen dinners, pre-made lasagnas, and soup ingredients from the Hungry Moose Market (7am-7pm) which sits just below the Vista Food Hall on the first floor of the nearby Exchange Building in Mountain Village. Both are within two minute’s walk of the Shoshone Hotel.
Chet’s Bar and Grill is also downstairs for a convenient restaurant outing. I would make reservations ahead of time. It’s family friendly and has a kids menu as well.
4. Pool/Hot Tub
The Shoshone Hotel provides easy access to its large outdoor heated swimming pool and indoor hot tub. It’s super fun to swim and soak in the pool with the fairy lights and snow. And as a bonus, you can access the entrance of the pool without going outside which makes for a less jarring transition from cold to hot.
5. Full Service
The Shoshone Hotel combines the service of a hotel with the comfort and space of a condominium, so you get the best of both worlds. The front desk is available for questions, a concierge service can schedule activities, and an onsite fitness room is available for free.
You can also arrange resort transportation or grab a coffee at the onsite coffee shop near the lobby to kick off your day.
6. Fireplaces
On the building’s first floor, you’ll find cozy fireplaces in the coffee shop area along with a large checker board next to the fire ready for gaming. There is also another fireplace area with seating near the Huntley Lodge elevators.

7. Movie Nights and Activities
The Shoshone Hotel has a daily children’s art activity, and they show movies on certain nights in their auditorium. When our daughters were younger, they always enjoyed the crafts and it provided a nice break from skiing if needed.

How To Book the Shoshone Condos
We really like the Shoshone Hotel, but I have to admit the price is sometimes a deterrent. Expect somewhere in the range of $630-$1000/night.
You can often save money by booking one of the units offered on VRBO, but also check to see if it’s cheaper booking directly through Big Sky Resort. It largely depends on whether the resort is offering any promotions at the time of your trip and the time of year that you are visiting.
Big Sky Resort also offers a breakfast option for an additional price. The ”breakfast included” price includes a very nice hot and cold buffet in the Huntley Lodge which we have enjoyed often.
In our experience, it has most often been less expensive to book the Shoshone through VRBO and reserve lift tickets in advance through Big Sky’s website. My advice is to check both VRBO or other booking engine as well as Big Sky Resort and compare prices.
For instance, I checked the dates for a 7 night stay at Shoshone Hotel from Jan 10 – Jan 17, 2026 and found a VRBO for the week for a total of $7200. On the Big Sky Resort website, a Shoshone Unit was $8400 (no breakfast) for the same week.
Note that the week between Christmas and New Year’s and the month of February is considered peak ski season at Big Sky.
Tip: For shorter stays, we have booked the Huntley Lodge which adjoins the Shoshone Hotel. It can be a more affordable option, and although very nice, is a basic hotel room.
