Where To Stay In Paris With Family

Looking For Family-Friendly Lodging In Paris? Check Out Our Favorite Areas To Stay, Recommended Hotels and Apartments For Families, and Lodging Tips

Paris has a huge inventory of hotel rooms and apartment rentals for vacationing families. That being said, it can be surprisingly difficult to find accommodations for a family.

My goal is to save you hours of searching for a well-located hotel in Paris that will sleep a family of 3 or 4. I’ve even included a sprinkle of those that sleep 5.

This is the list of hotels and apartments I give to family and friends traveling to Paris with kids.

It is our personal list of places that we have stayed in previously, have been recommended by friends we trust, or we have bookmarked as possibilities for future visits.

Each of these hotels and apartments has a fantastic location with excellent access to the Metro, shops, cafes, markets, and Paris’s main attractions.

All of the hotels, unless otherwise noted, have earned a “Traveler’s Choice” designation on TripAdvisor which means its reviews rank within the top 10%. And, unless noted, all have received “exceptional” or “wonderful” reviews from Hotels.com, Booking.com, TripAdvisor, or Google.

I’ll also cover the best areas for families to stay when visiting Paris. But first, I’ll start with some general lodging advice. Here we go!

Our Paris Lodging Advice

A Typical Paris Hotel Room

Room Size: First things first- hotel rooms in Paris are SMALL, the bathrooms are small, and the elevators are small, often accommodating just two people. Just know that going in, so you can set reasonable expectations.

In Paris, the size of hotel rooms averages 12 to 18 square meters (130-190 square feet). Compare that to a typical American hotel room that averages around 300 to 350 square feet. So, expect something small and maybe consider packing your smaller luggage set.

Also note that Paris hotels are often housed in centuries old buildings. While this adds to the Parisian charm, it also comes with thinner walls, steeper staircases, tiny elevators (or no elevator at all), and small lobby areas.

Bed Configurations: In the United States, a standard hotel room typically includes two queen beds that sleep 4. This is not the case in Paris where many hotel rooms are quite small with just one queen or full size bed.

If a room does sleep 4, it often includes a full size or queen size bed along with a sofa bed to accommodate children.

Don’t worry, you will find a fantastic place to stay in Paris. Many hotels offer “Triple Rooms” (3 single twin beds or a double/queen and single), or a “Family Room” which will accommodate 3 or more with various bed configurations including pullout sofa beds.

Some hotels will also offer connecting rooms also known as “communicating rooms”, “interconnected rooms”, and “adjoining rooms”. But know that they are not necessarily connected with an interior door like we have here in the States. See more about this below.

Connecting Rooms

Important! The term “connecting room” does not necessarily mean that the two rooms are conjoined with an interior door that directly opens into each room.

In Paris, connecting rooms often share a lockable main door that leads to a small private hallway with two individual hotel rooms.

If you are traveling with young children, some parents simply prop the two inner doors open. For those families traveling with teens, it can be ideal to have independent rooms, each with its own bathroom.

Stairs & Elevators

Many of the hotels I’ve listed here have either street view rooms or courtyard views. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I am partial to a hotel’s higher floors that provide rooms with views of Parisian rooftops and streets, but this arrangement can often be noisy depending on your location.

You can offset some street noise by making sure the hotel or apartment has double or triple-pane windows.

When our daughters were younger, we stayed closer to the ground level, courtyard side to avoid schlepping the stroller up the stairs and to have a quieter place to sleep. It worked really well for us at a time when naps were still a consideration.

Now that they are older, I opt for a higher level room at the hotel when possible. Keep in mind, however, that multi-level hotels and apartment buildings won’t necessarily have an elevator. And if they do, the “lift” may not always go to the top floor but will stop beneath it and still require stairs.

Also know that elevators in Paris are most likely super small. Some will only fit 1 person and one piece of luggage at a time.

If you have strollers and younger kiddos, you might want to make sure there is a suitable elevator if you’re staying on a higher floor.

Also, know that the ground level is considered floor “0”, and the 1st floor is the one above ground level. For example, the 4th floor in Paris is considered a 5th floor in the U.S.

Location, Location, Location!

The most important consideration for families traveling to Paris with kids is the location of your lodging. Ideally, you are located in an area that is centrally located to many Parisian landmarks and attractions and within walking distance to a few cafes, boulangeries, and a Metro station (you’ll see the circled M on Google Maps).

It’s nice to be able to conveniently pick up croissants at a boulangerie (bakery) in the morning on the way to your activities or sit at a nearby cafe.

In the evenings, it can sometimes be challenging to get the kids to rally to travel to a restaurant after coming back to the lodging, so it’s especially nice to have a restaurant or cafe within walking distance, or even a market to pick up items to eat at your hotel or apartment.

Note that you will be walking a lot even if you are riding the Metro!

Use Google Maps to show locations of Metro stations and cafes near the hotel or apartment you are considering. You can even do street view which is a fun way to explore your street and neighborhood before arriving!

Lodging Prices

Paris lodging is EXPENSIVE, especially during peak season, June-August. The week between Christmas and New Years is also considered peak. That’s one terrific reason to consider a trip to Paris during the kid’s spring break!

Unless you want the service of a hotel, apartments are often less expensive with more room and have the added convenience of a kitchen or kitchenette and sometimes a clothes washer.

Air Conditioning

If you are visiting during the summer, I recommend checking to make sure that the hotel or vacation rental has air conditioning. I also recommend booking early if visiting during the summer peak season so that you’ll have more lodging choices.

The hotels and apartments I’ve listed here have air conditioning unless otherwise noted.

Tip: Spring is an excellent time to visit Paris with less crowds and more affordable lodging. Make it a spring break destination with the family!

Early Morning Arrivals

If your flight arrives in the early morning (as do most U.S. flights ), consider adding a night’s stay at the front end of your trip so that you can check in upon arrival rather than waiting for an afternoon check-in.

It can be worth it even though you won’t actually sleep there that night. Otherwise, check to see if you can store your luggage at the hotel until check-in time.

Transportation From The Airport

Most hotels and vacation rentals recommend the name of a reliable transportation service from the airport. If you have young kids, strollers, or lots of luggage, pay the price of the service for the convenience. Lugging kids and suitcases on the train can be challenging to say the least!

If taking the train from the airport to the city, find out how close your hotel is to the train station and whether there is a convenient Metro stop near your hotel.

See Charles de Gaulle Airport’s guide to taking the train from the airport to Paris city center.

Apartment Rental Agencies

Unless you want the service of a hotel, I’ve found apartments to often be less expensive with a lot more room.

Paris Perfect rents a variety of apartments throughout the city. They are a super helpful, well respected agency, and provide very nice accommodations with most located in the 7th. We’ve also used Cobblestone Paris Rentals, Booking.com and VRBO to rent an apartment in Paris.

Many one bedroom apartments will sleep 4 with a private bedroom and a sofa in the living area that converts to a bed, potentially sleeping two children depending on the size of your kids and the size of the sofa.

If a one bedroom apartment will accommodate your family, it will generally be more affordable than a 2 bedroom apartment.

Best Areas To Stay In Paris With Kids

Paris is separated into 20 arrondissements, which you can think of as 20 distinct neighborhoods. We believe the best arrondissements for families visiting Paris are located in the 5th, 6th, and 7th arrondissements, specifically the Rue Cler area, (7th); Latin Quarter (5th), and Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th).

These 3 areas are in central Paris and conveniently located on the left bank of the Seine River. The areas are safe, have plenty of nearby shops and cafes, and will have good central access to many Parisian landmarks and attractions (many are in walking distance).

  • The Rue Cler area in the 7th arrondissement is located near the Eiffel Tower, Musée d’Orsay, and Les Invalides.
  • The Latin Quarter area in the 5th arrondissement is near Notre Dame, the Sorbonne, and the Panthenon
  • The Saint-Germain-des-Prés area in the 6th arrondissement is close to Luxembourg Gardens, Le Bon Marche, and the Louvre.
A map of central Paris highlights three neighborhoods: Rue Cler (7th), Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and the Latin Quarter, each outlined in blue boxes with labeled text over a detailed street map background.
These are the 3 areas I always go to when looking for family lodging in Paris.

Note that many lodging options below include sofa beds to accommodate children. You’ll need to decide whether a sofa bed will fit your kiddos or whether they each need a bed.

Where To Stay In Paris With Family- The Rue Cler Area in the 7th

Why We Like The Rue Cler Area (7th)

We highly recommend staying in Paris’s quiet but centrally located 7th arrondissement near the Rue Cler Market Street. This location is excellent and within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower, 2 metro stations, the Seine River, and the pedestrian-only market street Rue Cler, a foodie’s dream.

You can take evening strolls to watch the Eiffel Tower light up at night (about a 15 min walk) or grab picnic fixings at Rue Cler Market and head to Champs de Mars Park to let the kids play at the playground with the Eiffel Tower in the background.

You can also walk to the Musée d’Orsay within 30 minutes by accessing the nice pedestrian-only walkway called Les Berges de Seine that leads all the way to the Louvre.

See our Berges de Seine- A Must Do Walk in Paris for more info on the perfect walk in Paris for families.

You’ll also have good access to the Seine River and the hop-on, hop off water taxi called the Batobus as well as two metro stations in the Rue Cler area: Ecole Militaire and La Tour-Maubourg.

A map of Paris showing the area around Rue Cler, near the Eiffel Tower, with nearby hotels, parks, and landmarks highlighted and circled in black.
The circled area is the general area where I like to stay in the 7th. It’s close to Rue Cler Market St. and has access to two nearby metro stations (Ecole Militaire and La Tour-Maubourg.) I like the area south of Rue St. Dominque and east of Avenue Bosquet. It’s a bit quieter than the areas near the Eiffel Tower and Seine River. Map courtesy of Google Maps and annotated by me.

I love the Haussmann style buildings found here, and many lodging options have an Eiffel Tower view from your window! Mais oui!

As with most Parisian neighborhoods, you can conveniently buy wine, fruit, cheese, a wonderful rotisserie chicken, made to order crepes, and a baguette to eat at your lodging after a long day of sightseeing.

It’s nice to return to a quiet neighborhood after experiencing the hustle and bustle of the day. Keep in mind that it is a quiet area with limited shopping and nightlife.

Recommended Apartments For Families in the Rue Cler Area (7th)

Another option for families is to rent a vacation rental in Paris. Renting an apartment will give your family more space, save money on eating out, and make you feel more like a Parisian than a tourist.

Tip: When looking for an apartment in the 7th, try to find one closest to Rue Cler but not necessarily on Rue Cler Market Street. It can be loud unless you have double-paned windows as the market vendors arrive early and the cafes are open late!

Here are some examples of vacation rentals found in the 7th near the Rue Cler area:

Pomerol Apartment (VRBO). Oozing with Parisian charm, it’s a one bedroom with a nice sofa bed for one, Eiffel Tower views, and a fantastic location on Rue Cler. I wouldn’t hesitate to rent this apartment again. When we were there, the sofa bed had a trundle bed, so both young girls could sleep on it. It officially sleeps 3 though.

My Maison in Paris Champ de Mars- 1 and 2 Bedroom Deluxe– (booking.com). My Maison has several apartments for rent throughout Paris. Great location on Champ de Mars and excellent reviews.

Two Bedroom – Deluxe My Maison Le Paris Invalides (booking.com). Same company as above in different location in the 7th, closer to the Invalides. Also offers one bedroom options. $544 night for one bedroom and $966 night for 2 bedroom.

Apartment Invalides Avec Terrace (booking.com). 1 bedroom with queen and sofa bed in living room, sleeps 4. Love the 5th floor balcony. Downside is no air conditioning.

Rue Cler Charm (VRBO). 2 bedroom, 2 baths, sleeps 4. I like that the 2nd bedroom has 2 single beds for the kiddos rather than a pullout sofa bed.

Splendid Apartment Champs de Mars (VRBO). 2 bedroom, 2 bath, sleeps 8! Each bedroom has a Queen bed and the living room has 2 double sofa beds. Ground floor.

Résidence Charles Floquet– (booking.com) Offers 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. Super close to the Eiffel Tower but not as near to Rue Cler. Bir-Hakeim Metro Station.

Where To Stay In Paris With Family- The Latin Quarter (5th)

Why We Like The Latin Quarter

The Latin Quarter is one of the oldest arrissdosments in Paris, so you’ll find lovely cobbled streets and a fantastic street market, Rue Mouffetard. It’s a great place to find all sorts of foodie shops selling bread, cheese, chocolate, souvenirs, and more.

The Latin Quarter is also super close to the Seine River, Notre Dame Cathedral and Ile St. Louis (ice cream at Bethillion!), all are perfect for after dinner strolls.

In general, the area has good energy with lots of cafes and shops and feels lively, perhaps owing to its proximity to the Sorbonne University. You’ll also find lots of book stores including the infamous Shakespeare & Co. (all books are in English- purchase one and get a souvenir stamp inside the cover). Always a fun browse!

If you have teenagers, they might enjoy this area more than the quieter neighborhood feel of Rue Cler in the 7th. Overall, the area closer to the Seine will have more nightlife and be livelier and more touristy than the area near Rue Mouffetard and Place Monge.

In the Latin Quarter, the closer you are to the Seine the closer it is to walk to many of Paris’s attractions.

This area of Paris is well connected with several Metro stops, but you are also within a 30 minute walk to many attractions- St. Chapelle, Notre Dame, Louvre, Luxembourg Gardens, and Musee d’Orsay to name a few.

A map of central Paris showing landmarks like Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Panthéon, and the Latin Quarter, with nearby streets, metro stations, and the Seine River highlighted.
The Latin Quarter is bordered by the Seine River and Jardin de Plantes. Rue Mouffetard is the wonderful market street in the area. I like the area closer to the Seine River for the ability to walk to so many places. Map courtesy of Google Maps.

The king bed is located in a loft area which offers a bit more privacy than a standard room, however the bathroom setup is less private. Though not a “Traveler’s Choice” on Trip Advisor, I included it here because it sleeps everyone in one room. It is rated “very good” on hotels.com and booking.com with thousands of reviews.

Recommended Apartments For Families in the Latin Quarter (5th)

Here are some examples of apartments in the Latin Quarter:

Latin Quarter Loft– (VRBO) We just returned from our stay here at this tiny loft apartment on Rue de la Huchette. We absolutely loved the location on a pedestrian street next to the Seine. The location just couldn’t be beat as we were able to walk to so many attractions. The actual apartment is very good, although you can’t stand up in the loft and seating is limited in the living room when the sofa is used as a bed. A queen bed is located in the loft, and there is a surprisingly comfortable sofa bed in the living room. No elevator. 3rd floor. Sleeps 4.

Brand New Home In Heart of Latin Quarter (booking.com) 1 bedroom with king bed and living room with sofa bed, sleeps 4. Recently renovated, first floor apartment. The Maubert Mutualité Metro station is just a short walk away.

Where To Stay In Paris With Family- The Saint-Germain-des-Prés Area (6th)

Why We Like The Saint-Germain-des-Prés

The Saint-Germain-des-Prés area location overlaps a bit with the Latin Quarter as they are situated next to each other. The Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood is close to excellent shopping (Le Bon Marché, a wonderful department store), famous cafes like Cafe Deux Margots and Café de Flore, and one of Paris’s best parks, Luxembourg Gardens.

You’re also super close to Notre Dame, the Louvre, St. Sulpice Church (its stained glass is amazing), and my favorite stop, the La Grande Épicerie in Le Bon Marche.

Tip: Luxembourg Gardens is a wonderful place to visit with kids. See our our 10 Things To Do In Paris With Kids and Paris Playgrounds Your Kids Will Love.

Like Rue Cler and the Latin Quarter, Saint-Germain-des-Prés has a central location in Paris, and you could easily walk to the Louvre, Tuileries Garden, and Place Vendôme. That being said, I would still look at how close the Metro station is located to your lodging if exploring other areas of Paris.

A digital map of central Paris highlights hotels, landmarks, and points of interest near the Seine River, Musée du Louvre, Jardin du Luxembourg, and Saint-Germain des Prés district. Pink icons mark hotel locations.
Saint-Germain-des-Prés area is a good area for young families with its proximity to Luxembourg Gardens and its wonderful playground. The area is also full of shops and eateries.
